OVERVIEW

Herron Coorey was engaged to complete the redevelopment of the heritage-listed New Farm Cinemas.

HOW WE HELPED

The property was first constructed in 1921 by Merthyr Picture Palace and changed ownership until it was later left abandoned in 2003. A decade later the property was purchased by the Sourris brothers who then appointed Herron Coorey to undertake the redevelopment project.

We worked closely with our clients, Stephen and Peter Sourris, to carefully and intentionally refurbish the property into a premium cinema complex, extending its offering from a two-screen to a six-screen theatre. Each with differing capacities and requirements, Herron Coorey constructed the theatres with the venue’s history front of mind.

This project was engaged upon a cost-plus contract, and its completion was valued at $2.63m. It took a duration of 26 weeks, and was finished in 2014.

Herron Coorey worked with the architects at May + Swan Architects, and the structural engineers at John G. Batterham to revitalise the New Farm Cinema complex, reinstating its cultural icon status.
